Go ahead, feel free to get as dirty as you need to be in the garden, I’ve got you covered. Seriously, take off those gloves and get right in there with those green fingers. grin . In previous blog posts we attempted this soap recipe as well as this soap recipe, with mixed results. Today, we want to take on this gardener’s deep clean exfoliating handmade soap recipe, are you up for the task?
I keep telling myself that I really need to try some of these soap making recipes, but alas I never quite get to it. This one was lucky that it associated itself with my favorite hobby – gardening and therefore peeked my interest a tad bit more. The pumice acts as an exfoliant, whilst the sage has anti bacterial properties. The deep green color is also from the sage whilst the lovely scent is courtesy of the essential oils. For an even more scrubby soap try adding oatmeal, fine coffee grounds or black pepper.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- olive oil
- coconut oil
- almond oil
- castor oil
- sage infused water (tea)
- lye
- rosemary essential oil
- peppermint essential oil
- pumice
- oatmeal, fine coffee grounds or black pepper (optional)
- mason jar
- crockpot
- immersion blender
- sharp knife
- soap molds
I began (as instructed) by making the infused tea, which involved infusing either sage or rosemary with boiling water for about 5 minutes. Be mindful of how dark you want your soap to be as the color of the tea will determine that. The oil mixture is prepared in the crockpot while we wait for the tea to cool down. And then the lye solution is made by dissolving the lye in the infused tea.
Next step, involves cooking the soap in the crockpot. Just make sure you stir it occasionally, they say that this helps speed up the cooking process. When the soap is ‘cooked’ you can then add the exfoliating ingredients e.g. pumice or coffee grounds etc and stir well to mix. Pour the soap into the molds and leave to cool overnight. The very next day, your soap should be ready for use! 🙂
