DIY Seed Germination Test

Has this ever happened to you before? You open up your diy seed vault, and pull out a pack of seeds. Then go through the whole process of sowing them in your diy seedling starter mix. After all that effort, you wait and wait and wait but none of the seeds germinate. Well you can save yourself all the trouble using this diy seed germination test, I recently discovered.

This simple test is very effective and could save you a lot of time as well as money. I think I have already mentioned this in a previous post, the reality is you can extend the life of the seeds by storing them the right way. There are some seeds that generally won’t do well after two years, such as chives and parsley. However, you can still save yourself some money by only buying those ‘weak’ seeds and then planting any leftover seeds that you may have stored from last season.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • seeds
  • paper towel
  • ziploc bags
  • marker
  • water

As you may have noticed in the materials list, paper towel is listed. This will be your growing medium for the test. The idea is to try replicate the perfect germination conditions to see if you can get the seeds to sprout. The results will be calculated by working out the percentage of germinating seeds vs those that did not. For example, if 5 seeds out of 10 germinate then the germination rate is at 50%, which is the acceptable rate.
