Growing herbs is one of my favorite gardening activities. It doesnt matter is it is winter or you do not have a lot of space, you can still grow your own fresh herbs. There are many different kinds of fresh herb gardens, the next one I am going to try is this diy hanging tin can herb garden, I found on Pinterest.
This project is simple and the materials needed are mostly free. You may have to purchase your herbs, but they should not cost you more than three bucks for each one. I will probably not go all out with the outside decor of the cans, just keep it very simple.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- tin cans with snap on plastic lids
- coat hangers
- pliers
- scissors
- fresh herbs (basil, rosemary, dill or clinantro)
- masking tape
- coffee filters
- nail
- hammer
- x-acto knife
- can opener
- scrap paper or fabric (optional)
- glue (optional)
- spray adhesive (optional)
- marker (optional)
Clean your tin cans out first before you get started. The first thing you must do is remove the bottom of the can using the opener. Once the bottom is out, you need to punch up to 15 holes in the center using the hammer and nail. The bottom the fits snuggly inside the can and two holes for the handles punched on the sides.
The herb plant goes into the can next, followed by the coffee filter that holds the soil and prevents leakages. I had a hard time cutting the hole in the center of the plastic top, as it has to be just the right size for the plant which you squeeze through the hole. There are many options as far as the outside decor is concerned. I just used a marker to label my cans. The herb garden can hang from curtain rods or hooks in your ceiling, next to a bright window.
