DIY Earthbag Dome

Over the past couple of years we have covered several different types of accommodation, that one could erect on their homestead. From the diy wofati log cabin, to the diy earthbag roundhouse and even the diy plastic bottle house. There is also this diy earthbag dome, that would blend in very well with the natural environment.

If you are looking to build a home on a budget then this is a great choice. Besides being a home you could also use it as a root cellar, chicken coop, shed or even a playhouse. With a few tweaks to the plans, you can actually build a bigger home with more rooms. Greg was able to build his for just $300, but admittedly that was almost a decade ago. LOL

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • shovel
  • barbed wire
  • empty bags
  • soil
  • tape measure
  • plastic bucket
  • level
  • hammer
  • gravel
  • stake
  • string
  • 2×4 plywood
  • slider
  • old tires or barrels

First thing you will have to do is identify a perfect location and then clear it. Drive a stake or stick into the ground with a string tied to it. Use that to mark a circle on the ground. Your first layer of bags filled with earth will be laid all the way round and then spread a thin layer of gravel on the floor inside your dome.

As you build up, make sure that you tap and level each course. Barbed wire should be added in between courses to reinforce your walls. For the construction of the arches, you can use old tires or rain barrels to hold up the bags. After the last bag is in place, you can choose to either plaster the ways or grow a living roof. Voila, your dome is ready! 🙂
