Nothing beats a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice in the morning for breakfast. Well, I know some people would prefer a cup of coffee or tea. Just last week we looked at canning meatballs, and before that it was canning chicken stock recipe. Have you ever tried canning fresh orange juice?
It is possible to preserve other bitter tasting citrus fruit, such as lemons and grapefruits. Make sure that you only squeeze the juice without the pith or the peels, or else you end up with a bitter tasting juice that tastes just like grapefruit juice. If you are ready to get started go ahead and grab your water bath canner .
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- oranges
- juice reamer
- large stockpot
- peeler
- canning jars
- canning utensils
- water bath canner
- kitchen towel
- strainer
You are probably going to need a few extra hands to help you with peeling the oranges in order to expedite the whole process. Especially if you are using an electric juicer. Otherwise you could just manually squeeze the oranges after cutting them into halves. The juice has to be strained and then heated until just before it starts boiling in the stockpot.
Make sure you wash and sterilize your jars before you ladle the hot juice into the jars. After leaving enough headspace and screwing on the lids, you can process in the water bath canner for about 15 minutes. Lift the jars from the canner and leave them to cool and seal overnight.
