How To Propagate Strawberry Plants

For a fruit with almost two hundred seeds per single fruit, it is actually funny that we maybe considering propagating strawberry plants. In previous posts on this blog we covered things like this diy strawberry pyramid and this diy strawberry ebucket. In both instances, we used already established young plants to build our planters.

There are quite a few strawberry varieties available, you need to choose wisely when considering propagation. There are two different methods that you can use, the first being dividing the lateral crowns or rhizomes. The easier one of the two methods though, is by using runners. In which case, you have to make sure you grow a variety that produces a bunch of runners.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------
  • sandy loam soil
  • small container
  • clothespins, rocks or sticks
  • pruning shears

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Fill a small container with sandy loam soil.

Step 2.

Direct the runners from the main plant into
the container and hold in place with a clothespin
rocks, dirt or even some sticks.

Step 3.

After the runner has established roots, use
the shears to snip and separate it from the
mother plant.

Voila! You now have a new strawberry plant, you can do this with a few runners on your ‘mother’ plant. Even if you forgot to snip it, it usually eventually just breaks off by itself. If you do not want to move the plant, you can just arrange the runners so that they establish themselves in and around the main plant. A new plant should start growing wherever the nodes establish their roots.
