As much as I love growing the ordinary everyday plants and herbs in my garden, I always strive to grow the ‘superfoods’ too. So far I have been successfully growing dragon fruit, acai berries, blueberries and pomegranates. This season I will be adding yet another one, that is why I have been doing research on the internet on how to grow chia seeds.
Contrary to popular belief, Chia (Salvia Hispanica) seeds are actually pretty easy to grow. It is recommended that you grow them organically, without adding any artificial fertilizers or pesticides. Chia seeds have many health benefits, hence their superfood status. They are are great source for linolenic and linoleic acid, which is required by the body for boosting the immune system and providing protection from bacteria, viruses as well as allergies.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- chia seeds
- compost
- mulch
- container or pots (optional)
Your plants will need a lot of space, so make sure you find them a great spot in your garden. Unlike most other plants it is not encouraged to work up the top soil too much, before planting your seeds directly in the ground. No holes are needed either, simply drop the seeds in your cleared area and then lightly rub some soil over the seeds.
Water daily, and germination should occur within 7 days. When plants are about 3 inches tall, you can start thinning them out. You can start enjoying the young plants as you wait for them to floor and form seeds. The seeds will be ready for harvest when most of the petals have fallen off the flower head. Collect the heads in a paper bag, and allow the seeds to dry a little further.
