DIY Upside Down Tomato Planter

I read somewhere that growing tomatoes upside down is actually the best way to grow them as it promotes their growth. I do not know how true that is, I do know though that most people opt for this option because they do not have enough space for a garden.

This hanging tomato planter will work just as good if not better as the Topsy Turvy one that is often advertised on late night infomercials. Why buy when you can make one yourself at home? That is exactly what I said. lol

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Plastic Bucket With Metal Handle & Lid
  • Potting Soil
  • Coffee Filter Or Newspaper
  • Knife

Remove any plastic packaging on the outside of the bucket, then clean the inside using a gallon of water and one tablespoon of bleach. Create a hole in the bottom of the cleaned bucket that you will plant your tomato plant in. Cover the hole with a coffee filter or newspaper. Next add your potting soil, fill up as much of the bucket as possible.

Don’t fill it up all the way to the top. Place the lid back on and then turn the bucket upside down and plant your tomato plant directly in the space below the hole you made on the bottom. Replace the coffee filter or the newspaper. Turn it over and remove the lid before hanging the bucket up. The last step is watering the plant until the bucket is soaked and the water is dripping through the bottom. Ideally you should try water the plant every two days or so.
