Today, I found this awesome project for the chicken lovers who also like to re-purpose stuff. How about you try converting an old dresser into a chick brooder?
The hard part really is finding a suitable old dresser to use. We can usually find something lying around the house so that solves that problem. As for the heat lamp, you may have to purchase that or perhaps use an ordinary light bulb fixture.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- old dresser
- heat lamp
- electrical cord
- pine shavings
- small chicken feeder & waterer
- chicken wire
- 2×2 lumber
- door hinges
- wood screws or nails
- staple gun
- hand drill
- clothes peg or clamp
- plywood sheet (optional)
- hammer (optional)
Depending on the old dresser’s design you may have to remove a couple of the top or middle drawers. If the dresser does not have fixed boards under the drawers, then you are going to have cut out the plywood sheet and fix it in place to create the brooder bottom.
You could just fix chicken wire to the front and leave a small area where it is removable so you can access the brooder. Otherwise building small doors, like those in the picture, that have chicken wire on the outside would be even better.
For the heat lamp, just drill a hole in the top, insert your electrical cord and then connect your heat lamp on the inside of the dresser. If you have enough space within the brooder, you can adjust the height of the lamp by using a clamp or peg to hold the electrical cord on the top side of the dresser.
