DIY 3 Bin Compost System

If you are not already composting, you should start immediately especially if you are serious about your gardening. In the past we have talked about different composting systems, today I discovered the diy 3 bin compost system.

I personally think that if you are new to composting, this is probably the easiest way I know so far to get started. The system is very simple to implement and maintain. You just let nature do its work.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 3 plastic trash cans or containers with lids
  • kitchen scraps
  • chicken coop waste
  • yard and garden scraps
  • garden hose (optional)

Initially you can just start with one bin in which you throw in everything from your kitchen scraps to your coop waste and old as well as dead stuff from your garden. It is important that you keep this bin moist and also turn the material over as often as possible. You can use your garden hose to spray down your compost.

When the first bin fills up, all the contents are moved to bin number two. The process of moving everything helps mix it all up as well as aerates it. Believe it or not this actually helps your compost and speeds up the process. Leave this bin as is, do not moisten or turn.

The third time bin one is full, your third bin should have compost that is ready for use in your garden. You can tell it is ready by feeling its texture and temperature. There should be no chunks of material and no heat otherwise it is not ready and needs to decompose further.
