Crockpot Greek Yogurt Recipe

Oh my, don’t even get me started I love me some yogurt. I have actually made both homemade normal yogurt and homemade greek yogurt using a bowl. However, I think I have discovered an even better method using this homemade crockpot greek yogurt recipe.

Obviously, you will need to pull out your crockpot for this recipe. The process itself is pretty straight forward, the only draw back is the amount of time that it takes to make the yogurt. Nevertheless, it is so delicious, worth the wait. Trust me on this one.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • whole, 1%, 2% or skim pasteurized milk
  • natural plain yogurt
  • crockpot
  • kitchen thermometer
  • bowl
  • bath towel
  • air tight container
  • cheesecloth
  • honey (optional)

Begin by adding your milk to your crockpot. Ultra-pasteurized milk is not recommend for this recipe.Cover and cook on the low setting for about 2 and a half hours or until your milk reaches a temperature of 180 degrees F. Then unplug and let it sit for about 60 minutes, with the cover off so it cools down to about 110 degrees F.

Scoop up some of the milk and mix with the yogurt, before returning the mixture back into the crockpot. Be careful take your time, I always tend to spill a lot of milk when doing this. If you want to add any flavors, like honey this will be the time to do it.

Now for the long wait period, cover the crockpot with a bath towel then place into your oven and leave the light on for up to 8 hours. It is so much less painful if you leave it overnight. In the morning refrigerate the yogurt for about 3 hours, followed by two 1 hour long straining session with the damp cheesecloth.

They whey should collect at the bottom of the bowl, and your greek yogurt is left in the cheesecloth. Find an airtight container to store your greek yogurt in the fridge. When it is time to enjoy, you can add any fresh or frozen fruit that you like.
