So, it is probably no secret that I have a sweet tooth. One of my favorite things to ‘snack’ on is sugar cane. Did you know that it is pretty easy to grow your own sugar cane in your backyard?
Sugar cane grows best in warm areas that have a lot of water. Grab your stalks from a farmers market, online or one of those ethnic stores.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- sugar cane stalks
- bloodmeal (optional)
- container (optional)
- potting soil (optional)
There are many different ways to plant sugar cane. The most popular way is to lay down a stalk with at least one bud horizontally in a a shallow trench from about half an inch to a few inches deep. Cover your stalk with enough soil and water it regularly.
It will take a few weeks before you start to see some sprouts, and up to 12 months or more before you can start harvesting your sugar cane. Sugar cane is perennial, so you do not need to keep replanting it every single year.
