How To Grow Baby Carrots

Naturally when you think of growing carrots, you probably want to prepare a large raised garden bed for them, right? Well hold your horses, I will explain below. Over the years we have grown carrots in containers and even grown purple sun carrots, which turned out well if I should say so myself. Today, I thought we should take a quick look at growing baby carrots.

Although you can harvest immature carrots and call them ‘baby carrots’ I prefer actually growing the miniture varieties  which are small even when mature. The easiest way to make sure that you have carrots below the tops, is to grow them in a controlled environment like a container. Did you know that radishes make good companion plants for carrots? They also grow faster than carrots, so you will harvest them way before and it is a great way to maximize your gardening space.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Prepare your container, making sure that it has adequate drainage on the bottom, before filling it up with your favorite potting soil mix. When planting your seeds, place them about 1/4″ into the soil, cover and then water well. Allow to grow to about 2 inches tall before thinning out and leaving them at least an inche apart in the pot for optimum growth.

Since this is a root vegetable, it is going to need controlled watering and some potassium. There should always be enough water, but not too much at the same time. If you stick a popsicle stick into the soil, and nothing sticks to it you need to water your carrots. Also apply mulch to help conserve water. In 55 to 65 days they should be about half an inch in diameter and ready for harvest. Enjoy! 🙂
