Canning Plums

My husband does not enjoy eating plums, something that really boggles my mind. They are so tangy and juicy especially when they are still fresh. I had to look up the recipe for canning plums, so I can save some to enjoy later on in the year.

I found a very simple recipe that uses the water bath canner. It is actually a recipe passed down from her Grandma, so that is always an added advantage using a tried and tested recipe.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • fresh plums
  • water
  • sugar
  • canning jars with lids
  • water bath canner
  • canning utensils
  • kitchen towel
  • large saucepan

Wash and clean your plums, before cutting them in half. Your canning jars should also be washed and disinfected and kept warm until you start stuffing them with juicy fresh plums. Don’t forget to make the syrup at a ratio of 1:4 i.e. one cup of sugar to four cups of water.

After screwing the lids back on and placing you jars into the water bath, processing them takes between 20 to 25 minutes. It all depends on whether you are using pint jars or quart jars. Let the jars cool, and make sure they are sealed properly before storing in a cool place.
