DIY Filing Cabinet Smoker

My hubby loves to smoke stuff, I mean he has probably tried to smoke a lot of other things that you never thought could be smoked. That is why in the past years I have shared many different smoker designs with you such as the diy old fridge smoker and the diy flower pot smoker. His latest project is this diy filling cabinet smoker.

As with a majority of the other projects, he will be upcycling an old filling cabinet. We had one in our shed but I am sure you can easily get one for free from somewhere. He found awesome step by step instructions, so this should be a pretty smooth affordable project. But knowing my sweetheart, it could drag on longer than it should (love you *insert smiley face*)

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • old metal file cabinet
  • veneered plywood
  • solid oak edge moulding
  • grill gates
  • washers
  • grommets
  • screws
  • nuts
  • finishing nails
  • aircraft remover
  • high-temp pain
  • metal support pegs
  • wood glue
  • wood stain
  • polyurethane
  • drill and bits
  • tin snipos
  • hammer
  • pliers
  • screw driver
  • thick leather gloves
  • rubber gloves
  • paint scraper
  • miter saw
  • grommet punch/press
  • hack saw or bolt cutters
  • wood clamp
  • vice grip

The first step is completely dismantling the cabinet before you get started. Remove everything from the drawers, the rails, the top, rails and the lock mechanisms too. Anything plastic withing the drawer has to be replaced or it will melt under the heat. Carefully apply the aircraft remover to strip the file cabinet and scrap away any leftover material before giving it a good wash with soap and water.

Once dry, go ahead and apply a couple of coats of the high temperature paint. This will seal the metal and help prevent future rust. Then the meat drawers are set up before moving on to your fire drawer. Reassemble everything, and then build a lid from the plywood. The handles for the drawers will go on last, they are made from the scraps of the plywood used to build the lid. That’s it your smoker will be ready for use! 🙂
