It has been a while since we have looked at some renewable energy resources. You know I am talking about the diy old satellite dish solar cooker or even diy plastic bucket solar cooker the we have featured in the past. Just the other day I ran into this diy earthen solar cooker idea on the internet.
The original idea was by a guy named Bart Orlando who wanted to help people in refugee camps and other poor countries in the world. This cooker can be made from a variety of salvaged materials which makes it a very affordable and environmentally friendly solution for boiling water and cooking in those areas.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- broken glass mirror or reflective can lids
- black gallon plastic containers
- pick
- shovel
- measuring tape
- parabolic shaped reflective lids (optional)
- nails (optional)
You will need a nice clear area that recieves a lot of sunshine specially around the midday hours. Then you simply mark a circle about 8 feet in diameter. Grab your pick and shovel and dig a hole around this circle about 5 feet deep, then you line up the reflective materials around the hole focusing the sun’s energy into the center.
The gallons of water or pots of rice are placed in a smaller pit in the middle of all the hole. According to a test conducted in southern Oregon on a 85 degree F day this solar cooker set up can cook up to 10 gallons of rice every hour between the hours of 11 am and 3 pm. Not bad at all, if you ask me! 🙂
