How To Grow Asparagus

This is one of the veggies that I love fried. So today I decided why not blog about how to grow asparagus in your own garden. Fresh veggies always taste way better than those we purchase from the grocery store. It turns out that growing asparagus is not that difficult at all.

The initial preparation is the hardest part. After that the wait for the first harvest might also be challenging because you are not supposed to harvest them in the first year. Then a few weeks of harvesting is allowed in the second year, only in the third year can you enjoy the full harvest. If you plant the crowns instead of the seeds, you will speed up the process and you will be able to harvest a whole year sooner.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • Asparagus Seeds Or Crowns
  • Chicken Manure
  • Organic Fertilizer
  • Garden Tools

Identify an area that gets a lot of sun and well drained soil with a pH between 6.5 to 7.5. It is recommended that you plant them in raised beds or ridges, but some people just plant in single holes. For best results plant crowns with fresh, firm-fleshed roots. Place manure on the bottom of the hole, then a little soil over the manure before planting the crown at least 6 inches deep with the roots spread out like an octopus.

Space your crowns between 16 to 18 inches apart. Then initially cover with 2 inches of soil. As the spears grow out of the soil, keep on adding more soil until the hole is covered. Keep the area free of weeds and watch out for diseases and pests such as the asparagus beetle. Plant your crowns in late winter. The harvesting season for asparagus begins in mid April to mid June. Spears should be at least 6 inches tall with tight tips when you harvest. Your asparagus will continue growing for up to 20 years, after each harvest it is important to let the ferns form throughout summer.
