How To Sweeten Your Tomatoes

Don’t you just hate it when you have grown nice big and seemingly juicy tomatoes and they turn out to be a little sour. I guess it is ok if you like your tomatoes sour, but me on the other hand I had to figure out how to sweeten my tomatoes.

The good news is, there is a simple solution. Funny enough it is something that has many uses around the house, so you should already have baking soda somewhere. If not again, it is available almost everywhere. lol

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • baking soda
  • watering can (optional)
  • water (optional)

There are two methods that accomplish the desired result, which is sweeter tomatoes. The first one involves sprinkling about a quarter cup of baking soda around the base of your tomato plant. It is important that you do not get any on the actual plant itself. Always test on one plant first, before applying to all your plants.

The second method requires you to mix a teaspoon of baking soda in a gallon of water and then water you plants using that. The first application of either one of the methods should be when the tomatoes are one inch in diameter and then repeat when they almost half grown.

How does it work? It turns out the sweetness of your tomatoes is determined by how acidic your soil is. When baking soda is applied it lowers the acidity and makes them sweeter.
