How To Grow Christmas Trees

I know most of the time when we talk about growing stuff on this blog, it is usually edible stuff that grows in your garden. Since Christmas is only a few weeks away and most people are probably heading out in search of their perfect one. I thought today we could do things a little differently and talk about how to grow a Christmas tree.

Did you know that they are many different Christmas tree varieties for you to choose from? Depending on your personal needs you can choose whether to have firs, pines, spruces or even cypresses. The most common variety are the Douglas Firs, in warmer climates they will usually have the firs. Spruces are for those that like colorful trees and cypresses although not traditional have the added advantage of being fast growing.

How To Grow Your Own Christmas Trees

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Ideally you want to plant your tree seedlings in a location that has well drained soil as well as full sun. The only time heavy clay will work is if you find a slope to plant your trees. When planting you want your rows to be at least 8 feet apart with in row spacing of at least 7 feet apart. The depth is determined by the individual seedling, check the trunk for coloration.

When it comes to watering, it is recommended that you stick to a weekly routine especially during the gardening season for the first year. Also make sure that you deal with any weeds around the trees and shape your tree also during the first 12 months. From year 3 onwards, you should be shaping and pruning your tree every summer. The tree should be ready for harvest after 6 years, simply cut it using either a chainsaw or a handsaw.
