With the sun shining outside, I thought today would be a perfect day to add a new spice to the garden. We already know how to grow marjoram as well as how to grow cumin. Since we have covered most of the common ones, how about we try growing caraway in your garden, huh?
The scientific name is Carum Carvi, and it is an easy to grow biennial, which prefers the cooler temperatures. Although most people grow it for the seeds, you can also harvest the root as it is edible too. Ideally, you should plant it in autumn, however you can also get away with spring planting. So are you ready to get started?
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- caraway seeds
- seedling trays (optional)
- seed starting mix (optional)
- compost
Direct sowing is probably your best option when it comes to planting these seeds. Since they are biennial, you want to plant them in a location that you wont need for at least 2 years in your garden. Recommended plant row spacing is about 8 inches apart and plant the seeds about half an inch deep.
In the first year it only grows to about 8 inches tall, but in the second year it grows three times as high and also produces plenty of seeds. The seeds will be ready for harvest in Fall, before that you can use the flowers and leaves for your cooking needs in the Summer.
