It has been a while since we have used these cans for a project. Which is sad really, for such a readily available resource. I think the last project featured on the blog was the diy greenhouse soda can solar heater. Anyhoot, today I thought you may be interested in making your own diy soda can soil blocker.
Don’t worry it is one of those easy soda can projects, that we all love. A few nips and tucks here and voila you have your blocker. A soil block allows you to plant your seed into a small block of soil, which you can then transplant when the time is right. What I love about this blocker though is that it has a small indentation for planting your seeds. You can easily adjust by size of your blocks too.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- soda can
- 1″ wooden dowel
- electrical tape
- utility knife---------------------- Advertisement ----------------------or pocket knife
------------------------------------------------------------------- - wooden screw
- handheld drill or screw driver
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1.
Use the utility knife to remove both the
top and the bottom section of the soda can.
Step 2.
Make another cut straight down one
of the sides of the soda can.
Step 3.
Smoothen out all the cut edges, with your knife.
Step 4.
Wrap the can loosely around the dowel. (it should
be able to freely slide up and down the dowel)
Step 5.
Secure the can by wrapping some electrical tape
around the outside of the can on the top and the bottom.
Step 6.
Drill the screw into the center of one end of dowel.
How To Use? Pull the dowel down about an inch or so on the end with the screw in. Pack some soil block mix into that end. Put that end down on a table or bench, and use your other hand to press the dowel down on your mix.
Lift the blocker off the table and gently push your soil block out. Set the blocks into a tray, you can use a tin foil pan. When it comes time to water your blocks, you simply add water to the bottom and leave the blocks to absorb the water they require.
