When warm weather is in our favor, I don’t mind cooking outside. Sometimes we grill stuff using our diy rotissere bbq pit or diy homemade bbq barrel. Other times, I just cook on the diy portable outdoor fireplace. With that in mind, any new solution that allows us to cook outside is always welcome. This is exactly why this diy open fire cooking bar, grabbed my attention.
What I love about using this kind of setup is that, I can cook whilst the rest of the family sits around and enjoys the fire at the same time. Also erecting the bar itself doesn’t seem complicated at all, there is no welding required just screwing in the joints together. Technically speaking with just a few tools, you should be able to have yours set up in 20 minutes or so. As far as cost is concerned, if you were to buy everything needed you would need to budget around $35 for this project.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- 1 1/4″ black iron pipe
- 1″ black iron pipe
- 1″ 90 degree elbows
- 1 1/4″ black iron caps
- 1/4″ bolts with nuts
- all-purpose concrete mix
- post hole digger
- measuing tape
- handheld drill
The important thing to remember, before you go purchasing the pipe for this project, is to make sure that you measure the diameter of your fire pit. This is assuming that you have already built a fire pit, that you will be installing the cooking bar over. You can make the bar itself wider than the fire pit itself or fall short, this is totally up to you.
The other thing I would not cut any corners on would be the depth of the hole for the concrete supports. It is recommended that they are at least 20 inches deep, so use that as a guideline. The anchor bolts should also not be ignored, as you want to lay a strong foundation for your cooking bar. This will help it more durable whilst also being stable enough to hold the heavy pots.
