Storing Potatoes

So you had a good potato harvest this season that left you with a lot of potatoes. Well you could can some of the potatoes, probably freeze some too. You can also just store your potatoes in a root cellar or cool place.

You do not need any special equipment or skills for this method. Maybe just a little patience as you carefully place the potatoes, so they are not stacked on top of each other.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • bushel or basket
  • hay
  • potatoes

The actual storage process involves alternate layers of hay and potatoes. You start with a layer of hay on the bottom, followed by a layer of potatoes. The top most layer should be hay.

If you have access to a barn or shed, you can lay your layers in there instead of the bushel. Kevin recommends you keep the potatoes out of direct sunlight and also you try not to bruise them or wash them during harvest.
