How To Prepare Cantaloup Seeds

Why buy seeds every year when you can grow your own seeds? That is right, if you are already growing cantaloupes in your garden, there is no need to buy the seeds. You just have to learn how to prepare your fresh cantaloupe seeds for planting.

It is best to prepare them in the Fall, so that they are ready for planting the next Spring. The process itself is not complicated at all, just follow the simple steps and you should have a good batch of seeds to use next season. I love doing this because, I save on buying seeds, more monety for other things on the homestead.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • fresh cantaloupes
  • spoon
  • bowl
  • colander
  • paper towel
  • water
  • glass jar
  • marker

When you cut your fresh cantaloup open, just scoop out the seeds using a spoon. Then you want to carefully remove the pulp, so that only the seeds are left in the bowl. Pour in some water that will cover the seeds, before setting the bowl away for at least 48 hours. This will remove all the pulp from the seeds.

The pulp floats and collects at the top, so you can easily pour that away. Then you just drain the seeds from the water using your colander. Lay out your seeds on the paper towel to dry, after giving them a good rinse. It will take up to 7 days for the seeds to dry. Store them in a labelled jar, until you are ready to plant them.
