How To Naturally Warm Up Your Garden

As Spring is fast approching most avid gardeners are ready to get started with transplanting their seedlings into the ground. However, often when we think that the frost has gone, we still experience a few more unexpected cooler nights. Today, I will share with you a quick tip on how to naturally warm up your garden, should you find yourself in such a situation.

Actually, there are two simple ways to do this, with the other being specific to certain plants. You can also deploy these same tactics in the Fall, to help you extend your growing season. I love these two methods for their ease and simplicity, I am sure you will too.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • young plants
  • metal water buckets
  • water
  • utility knife
  • milk jugs

For the first method, you will need a few buckets. Metal ones work better than plastic ones as they are better heat conductors. All you have to do is fill up these buckets with water and sit them in the rows between the plants in your garden. The buckets will absorb the sun’s heat during daylight hours and when night falls they will slowly release this heat back into the soil, therefore heating up your garden.

The second method works well for young pepper plants. You cut off the bottom section of the milk jugs and use these to cover your plants. This one is a little bit more labour intensive as you have to cover with the jugs at night time and then remove the jug covers every morning. The ideal temperature at which to remove the jugs would be about 60 degrees F.
