I know I hardly talk about them but we are raising two cows on our homestead, in addition to the sheep and the pigs. We have had a few problems with maintaining the pasture especially during the winter months. So I have been doing some research on how to improve your pasture on your homestead on the internet.

There are a few ways you can use to accomplish this, it all depends on your preference and the tools that you have at your disposal. There is no harm in trying the many different methods, as you try establish what works for your homestead. As for us, I think we will stick to the second method mentioned below it just makes more sense right now.

Method #1: Sacrifice Area

This requires you to section off, an area and let your livestock run wild in that area. Overtime it will become messy and muddy too. A great way to try control the mess, is to lay some straw on the ground. Another advantage of using this method is that, you can later dig up the straw which by then will be mixed with manure. Take this organic matter, and use it in your garden.

Method #2: Strip Feeding

As the title suggests, you simply lay the hay in short strips on the ground and allow your livestock to feed on it. In turn, the bales will be dropping their seeds on your pasture, the cows will be fertilizing with their manure, the ground is protected as feeding is spread over a larger area and overall it is just less messy. It takes more time and effort, but I personally think the it is all worth it in the long run.
