How To Grow Turnips

Turnips are one of the few vegetables that you can eat both the leaves and the roots. When I went online to research on how to grow turnips, I was surprised at how easy it was.

The best time to plant turnips is in the spring time, at least six weeks before the last frost. This will set you up for a fall harvest and the turnips tend to be sweeter.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • turnip seeds
  • compost
  • organic fertilizer
  • mulch
  • bamboo stick (optional)

The best soil to plant turnips in is a well drained loose and loamy soil. Just make sure that you plant them in an area that receives a lot of sunshine. After adding compost and fertilizer to the soil, plant the seeds in a row 1 – 2 inches apart and cover lightly.

Water well, to keep the soil moist. Mulch can be added when the plants reach 5″ tall. Harvest when the roots are 2″ in diameter. Never take more than 3 leaves in one harvest off a plant. You can store the roots for future use, just lay them down in a box and keep it in a cool place.
