How To Grow Sweet Corn

One of the things I look forward to eating every Summer is sweet corn. Where it is just boiled, roasted or barbequed, I love me some sweet corn. This is why I decided to learn how to grow sweet corn, in my own garden.

I understand there are many different varieties available. Some are sweeter than others, some mature faster than others and others grow better in cooler climates.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Sweet corn seeds are best sowed directly into the soil. They have fragile, shallow rooted seeds that may succumb to diseases and pests if transplanted. Plant seeds 1 inch deep and 4 inches apart in rows two to three feet apart.

Corn is a heavy feeder and needs organic fertilizer to be applied at least 3 times. At planting, at 1 foot tall and at 3 feet tall. Water well especially during the tasseling period. Covering with mulch helps with controlling weeds and preventing excessive evaporation.

Keep an eye out for cutworms and borers. Depending on the variety you choose to grow, you can expect your corn to mature within 75 to 85 days. When the silk turns brown and a milky liquid comes out of kernels, its ready for harvest.

It is best to pick it in the afternoon, and try to enjoy it immediately. Otherwise you can always store it in your refrigerator for up to 7 days.
