It is always nice to have variety in the garden, so this year we will be growing some summer squash too. Unbeknown to me, there is actually a super easy way to grow superb summer squash. There are many different varieties you can grow such as Sunburst, Sundance and White Bush.
This method involves deep watering and fertilizing the plants, right at the roots. At first it may seem like an expensive way to do this, however do not panic you can often find the nursery pots lying around for free.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- squash seeds
- compost
- gallon nursery pots
- hairy vetch seeds
- shovel
- rake
The secret is the hills that you create within your garden beds. Each one has a nursery pot in the middle with four to six squash seeds planted, half an inch deep and 3 inches apart around it. The nursery pot should be in at least 3 feet apart and in holes 2 feet by 1 foot. There are four holes on the bottom sides, and one in the center.
It is recommended that you grow your squash in succession, starting with the first crop immediately after the last frost. Compost is mixed into the soil that covers the hill up to one or two inches below the lid of the pots.
Hairy vetch is planted in between the hills to help provide nitrogen for the squash as well as restrict the growth of weeds. Watering is required at least once weekly into the pots. Keep an eye out for the squash bug, cucumber beetle, squash vine borer and powdery mildew.
