How to Grow Spinach In Pots

Every now and again I like to dabble in container vegetable gardening. This usually allows me to continue gardening throughout the winter. In the past we have grown in papaya in containers and even in cauliflower in containers. Today, I thought we could take a look at how to grow spinach in containers.

If you are going to use small pots make sure they are wide. You can also use window boxes or crates just make sure they are at least 6 inches deep. Besides using the right size pots, you will need to use the right type of soil and also to fertilize and water your spinach regularly.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • spinach seeds
  • seed tray
  • small containers or crates
  • potting soil
  • organic fertilizer
  • mulch
  • compost
  • fish emulsion (optional)
  • manure tea (optional)

Prepare your pots with potting soil, then plant your seeds at least half an inch deep in pots or you can also use seed trays. Germination should take between 1 to 2 weeks. Seed tray seedlings are ready to transplant when they have 2 to 3 leaves on each plant. Inside pots space your plants between 2 to 5 inches apart. The wider the spacing the bigger the leaves.

Place your pots in a sunny spot in the Fall and Winter, and in a spot that gets some partial shade in the Summer. Water only when necessary, the soil should be moist not soggy or wet. Apply compost before mulching your plants, slow release liquid fertilizer can also be applied at planting.

Keep an eye out for caterpillars, slugs and aphids. Your spinach should be ready for harvesting in about 5 to 7 weeks. The leaves should be about 3 inches long and each plant should have at least five healthy leaves on it. Harvest by removing outer leaves first.
