How To Grow Purple Cauliflower

As the number of years as an avid gardener increase, so does the frequency of wanting to venture out of the norm, and try growing something new in your garden. It doesn’t always have to be a new vegetable like I recently did with the holland greens. You can simply just try a new variety, and for example learn how to grow purple cauliflower.

Not only is the purple color exciting, this variety is also choke full of flavonoids which in turn help make the flesh purple. Other nutrients include Vitamin C, Vitamin A, folate, fiber, calcium as well as potassium. Purple cauliflower also tends to be sweeter than its white cousin. Most people say that it tastes more like broccoli, than the cauliflower most of us have become accustomed to.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

For best results, start your seeds indoors in early Spring. Ideally your seedlings should be about 5 weeks old when you transplant them. Germination should take 5 to 12 days. Plant about 1/4″ to 1/2″ deep and 2 feet apart. Apply compost before planting and organic fertilizer. Always remember to provide your plants enough water weekly or they will prematurely produce small heads.

Your cauliflower should be ready for harvest in about 90 to 120 days. Harvesting is slightly different from the common white variety, you are not required to cover the head. However, it is highly recommended that you use a sharp knife to cut off your mature heads, whilst they are still smooth or else they will become too grainy.
