Here is another one from my ‘strange’ fruit collection. I fell in love with this fruit after the first time I had passion fruit juice. Most people have probably never tasted them because they are usually very expensive. This is why it is a good idea to learn how to grow passion fruit from seeds.

There are many different varieties available, which produce yellow, orange or purple fruit. The most popular and widely used variety is the Passiflora Edulis. This is the variety that you will find in most products or at a local grocery store. Select your fruit wisely as this is where you will be getting your seeds from!

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • fresh passion fruit
  • containers or seed trays
  • seed starter mix or soil mix
  • paper towels
  • trellis

Depending on your zone, you can choose to start your seeds in trays, the container or in the really warm areas just plant them right into the ground. In the colder climates it maybe wise to keep it in a container or pot which you can move indoors during the cold winter months.

Passion fruit plants are not self fertile, so they will need some help. You can either get other plants to fertilize them or you can rely on the butterflies that love these plants to do the job for you.

The vines can grow very wildly, it is recommended you keep trimming them to stay in control. Train them to grow up a trellis, so that they can bear bigger juicer fruit. You will know it is time to enjoy them, when the fruit starts to shrivel up.
