How To Grow Papaya In Containers

Since we have a lot of land available for gardening, I tend to neglect container gardening, even though we have a small green house, which I think would be perfect for that. So today I decided why not keep busy by learning how to grow papaya in a container?

Did you know that there are three types of papaya plants? There is a male one that does not bare any fruit, then there is the female one which has the fruit and interestingly there is also a bisexual one, which does both. That is the plant I would want to have, two for one special. LOL

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • papayas or papaya seeds
  • wide mouth containers
  • stones
  • sand
  • compost
  • potting mix
  • organic fertilizer

Slice open your papaya and scoop the seeds out into a dish or plate. Lay down stone and sand in the base of your container for drainage, then top up with the soil and compost. Take the seeds and sprinkle them on top of the soil in the covering, covering them lightly with the soil and compost mixture.

Water your container regularly for up to 21 days, the container should be left in an area that gets a lot of sun. After about 5 weeks you should be able to identify the healthy seeds from the unhealthy ones. On average keep between four to five plants, until you know which are male and which are female.  Might not grow well in colder climates, unless you can keep them indoors or in a greenhouse, perhaps
