How To Grow Oats

Growing up my mother always reminded me how important it was to have my oats for breakfast every morning. As a result, I got to enjoy my oats and this is why I have decided to learn how to grow my own oats.

Besides being enjoyed as cereal, you can also use oats for baking cookies and making homemade soaps as well as creams. I just found out that some of the livestock may also enjoy either the actual oats or the oat grass. There are several different oat varieties you can grow, I will grow the Drummond variety.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • wild oat seeds or seedlings
  • compost
  • manure

Oats can be grown annually or perrenially in a well drained pH 6 soil. The seeds are best sown in early to middle Spring and the seedlings in early Spring or Fall. The seeds are sown 6mm deep, whilst the seedlings should be planted in rows 10 to 12 inches apart. If you are planting the larger oat varieties it is recommended that you make your rows 1.5 to 2 feet apart.

Keep your oats well watered and their soil moist throughout. Your oats should be ready to harvest in about 45 days. When you see the greenest kernels start to turn cream, you can go in and cut them 4 inches above the ground. These will need to be left out to dry in the sun for a few days. You can also just leave them to dry out in the field before haarvesting, however this can reduce your yield by up to 15 percent.
