How To Grow Lychee Trees From Seed

There is peaches and then there is lychees, yet another one of my favorite fruits. I just love the sweetness with a hint of sour sometimes. We do not currently have a tree on our homestead, so I googled how to grow a lychee tree from the fruit’s seeds.

Apparently if you grow it from seed, it will take longer to produce fruit up to 25 years or may never bear any. I donno how true this is or perhaps its just the nurseries trying to trick you into buying their seedlings.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • lychee fruit
  • sand
  • peat moss
  • compost (optional)
  • soil test kit (optional)
  • small container
  • plastic bucket (optional)

The lychee tree likes acidic soil between 5.5 to 7.5 ph. The seed must be planted in a shaded area. Heavy clay soild do not require sand and acidic soils do not use peat moss, use compost instead. Remove seeds from fruit and plant immediately 1/2 inch deep into the soil.

Water immediately after planting and provide 1 inch of water every week. Remember to keep in shaded area until the seedling grows, then you can transfer to a sunny spot as the actual tree needs a lot of sun.

Lychee trees do well in warmer climates of the US, such as Florida, Arizona, Hawaii and California. They have however been grown in many other areas, as long as they are in a protected area for the winter, they will survive.
