How To Grow Lettuce in a Wine Barrel

So if you are looking for a faster and easier way to grow your lettuce, then today is your lucky day. I just discovered that growing lettuce in a wine barrel is the simple solution.

This method allows you to be able to grow a lot of lettuce, really fast by shortening the growing period. The height of the barrel from the ground also helps reduce the loss to slugs and snails.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • lettuce seeds or seedlings
  • half an old  wooden wine barrel
  • potting mix
  • large upside down plastic pot (optional)

Although you can direct sow lettuce seeds, Stephanie recommends that you just purchase some seedlings if you have access to a nursery. That will speed up the whole process for you. Lettuce can grow well in shady areas too.

Generally it will take about 21 days for before you can start enjoying your lettuce. Remove the outer leaves and your lettuce will keep on producing more leaves. I like to mix and match different varieties, that is just something I like to do.
