How To Grow Gooseberries

The gooseberry is one of those berries that belongs in the not very popular category. It is not because they are not delicious, it is more due to the fact that not many people know how to grow gooseberries.

There are many different varieties available in many different colors. Most have a grape like taste, others taste like apricots and there are some that taste like apples too.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

Gooseberries can grow pretty much anywhere, they are not picky about the soil type too. However, if you have very hot summers, it is best to plant them in heavier soils. Soak before planting them at least 4 feet apart in early Spring or Fall.

Allow the plant to grow for 3 years, pruning away all but 6 stems each year. Your best fruit production will begin in the fourth year. Keep an eye out for a disease such as Powdery mildew and leaf spot. As for pests watch out for currantworm and the gooseberry fruitworm.

Harvesting can begin as early as the first week of July. They taste better when fresh, so try to enjoy them as soon as you harvest them from the plant. You can keep some and use them to make gooseberry jam, jellies or pies.
