Here is another one of those vegetables that almost anyone can grow in their garden. It is not a bad idea at all for you to take the time out to learn how to grow garden peas. Especially if you have never grown them before.

There are many different varieties available for you to choose from like my personal favorite the English Pea. What I love about peas is that they can be grown in colder weather. So I usually start of my gardening season with peas just after winter, as we await the arrival of spring.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

• garden pea seeds
• compost
• manure
• mulch
• organic fertilizer (optional)

Your peas will do best in a sunny area of the garden that gets at least 6 hours of sun per day. The best time to plant them is 4 to 6 weeks after the last frost. It is also better to plant the seeds directly into the garden, as the plants roots do not like to be disturbed once they get started.

Dig your compost into the ground before sowing your seeds. The taller varieties should be planted next to a trellis so it can suuport them. The shorter varities can be planted in rows one to two inches deep and 2 to 4 inches apart. Germination will take about a little more than a week, about 10 days or less.

Cover your pea plants with mulch to keep the moisture in and water with at least an inch of water every week. As far as diseases and pests are concerned watch out for aphids, powdery mildew, root rot and fusarium wilt. They are ready to harvest fresh, usually when the pods start swelling before they becom hard. Enjoy them fresh or you can go ahead freeze them to store for winter.
