There are many different varieties from Black Magic, Black Beauty, Black Bell, Sicilian, Italian, albino and white beauty. They are also available in different sizes, shapes and colors. Some can be round like an egg, long like a zucchini and purple in color. Others can be white or green in color too.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • eggplant seeds or seedlings
  • compost
  • organic fertilizer
  • seedling trays
  • seedling starter mix
  • mulch
  • stakes or tomato cages
  • liquid fertilizer
  • row covers (optional)

If you are going to be growing your eggplant from seeds, make sure you start your seeds off indoors in the winter. Eggplant does not like cold weather so the transplanting should occur when your soil is warm. Also make sure you find a nice sunny area, with well drained soil. Plant them at least 24 to 36 inches apart.

At transplant time, you can add the organic fertilizer as well as the compost too. Make sure you water well, and keep well watered throughout the season. A liquid plant food can also be administered every few weeks to keep them healthy. The plants will need support as they grow taller, therefore push in some stakes about 2 inches away from plant at transplant time.

Keep an eye out for the black flea beetle as well as verticillium wilt. The fruit will be ready for harvest when it stops growing, the skin becomes glossy, the flesh is hard and the seeds seeds are small. Be careful not to harvest under ripe or over ripe fruit. It will take a few tries, but I am sure you will figure it out.
