How To Grow Bamboo

Although, it is something that is not edible we still wanted to grow some on our homestead. You never know what projects may call for it such as the diy bamboo bean teepee and the homemade bamboo tomato cages. I have been told it is not very difficult to grow bamboo, so I am going to give it a try.

There are many different varieties to choose from, but basically two main categories. Clumping bamboo which grows slower, easier to contain and perfect for limited spaces. Then there is the running bamboo which grows very faster and requires larger spaces. I think we will start with the clumping bamboo, it seems like it will be easier to maintain.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • bamboo seeds or cuttings
  • organic fertilizer
  • container (optional)
  • sand (optional)
  • mulch (optional)

I really have little patience when it comes to waiting for seeds to germinate, so whenever I have the option to grow from cuttings best believe that is what I choose. Depending on the variety you select you need to find an area with full sun or afternoon sun. Plant your bamboo, keep well watered for the first couple of years and apply fertilizer as needed in Spring.

Running bamboo can be kept under control by either growing it in a pot, transplanting with the pot, laying a concrete enclosure around the plants or simply digging a trench around it and filling the trench with sand. Also it is recommended that you prune regularly and fertilize less often to slow down the growth.
