How To Grow Apricots From Seed

Well the truth is I have always enjoyed dried apricots more than the fresh ones. Unfortunately you can not get dried ones, without the fresh ones first. Unlike growing banana trees from seed or growing olive trees from seed, the method for growing apricots from seed is slightly different.

In order to be successful, you have to take the time out to prepare your seeds. Do that the right way and you improve your success rate. Also it is not recommended that if possible stay clear of grafter, hybrid or short season apricot seeds. They do not usually germinate, the mid to long season varieties are more ideal.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • fresh apricots
  • paring knife
  • newspapers
  • peat moss
  • mason jar or ziploc bag
  • nutcracker
  • vegetable brush
  • shovel (optional)
  • hardware cloth (optional)

Fully ripe or overripe apricots are what you should be using. Use the paring knife to split them open and carefully remove the seeds. Brush off any excess flesh from the seeds using the brush and then leave the seeds out on the newspaper for at least 3 hours to dry.

The nutcracker will split the seeds open so that you can remove the pits. Let them dry again for a few hours before you store in the fridge in either your mason jar or ziploc. Before you begin the actual germination process you should soak the seeds over night.

You have two choices, you can start the seeds indoors using damp peat moss or you can plant them outside. Indoors will allow germination in 4 to 6 weeks, outdoors will take longer. In both cases you will need to transplant the seeds after they germinate into a pot or a nice sunny area.
