How To Grow A Coconut Tree From A Coconut

Ok I have not been as excited about growing something from seed, as I am today. When I discovered that just like growing apricots from seed and growing olive trees from seeds , you could actually grow a coconut from another dehusked coconut I became very giddy. I loooove coconuts!

You can grab a coconut from the store, farmers market or neighbor for this method, just make sure it still has water inside by giving it a good shake. Also make sure that the three holes on the top have not been tampered with. These holes allow the sprouts to grow out of the coconut.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • dehusked coconut
  • bucket
  • warm water
  • large ziploc bag
  • bowl
  • paper towel
  • rock (optional)

Step By Step Instructions

Step 1.

Fill your bucket with warm water. Warm water is used in
order to help speed up the germination process.

Step 2.

Place the coconut into the bucket of water. Naturally it will
tend to float, so use the rock or stone to weigh it down.

Step 3.

Place the bucket in a warm area for 48 to 72 hours.

Step 4.

After 3 days, splash a little bit of the water from the bucket
into your ziploc bag. Place the coconut in the bag facing upwards.

Step 5.

Zip up the bag, and place the coconut in a bowl which in turn is
stored away in a warm dry place. It will take a couple of weeks for
the coconut to begin sprouting.

Step 6.

Move the bag to an area that receives some sunlight, like a sunny
windowsill as soon as it starts to sprout. Wrap the large exposed
roots in a damp paper towel to prevent them from drying up.

Step 7.

After about 8 weeks transplant the coconut into a larger
growing pot. Make sure the soil in the pot drains well, also.

The ziploc bag creates a simulated tropical environment which aides with the germination of the coconut. Leaving the coconut inside the ziploc bag for longer, can actually speed up the growth of your sprouts. The soil that you transplant your sprouting seed into should be mixed well, you can watch the video below on how to prepare the soil and transplant the seed when it is ready.
