How To Compost Chicken Manure In 18 Days

Often when we look at the benefits of raising chickens on the homestead, we only think about the eggs that will be available each morning for breakfast. However in previous blog posts I have looked at other positives such as the deep litter method for chickens. Did you know that you can compost chicken manure in just 18 days?

It turns out that the make up of most chicken waste found in coops, is the ideal 30:1 carbon to nitrogen ratio required for effective hot composting. As a result you could use just the poop and this method to make your own garden compost in about 3 weeks. This is awesome, since other composting techniques tend to take way longer than that.

Here’e What You’ll Need:

Before you begin make sure you have the correct material ratio. The materials are then chopped into small pieces. Add some water to achieve a moisture content of about 50%, not too wet and not too dry. Your pile must be at least 32 inches height, width as well as length in order to achieve the high temperatures required for composting.

The material will need to be turned daily in order to curb over heating. Unlike the traditional compost, you don’t have to worry about adding more material to your pile once started. It should take about 2 days to achieve the required high temperatures. Throughout the whole process, the smell should never be unbearable. You should aim for a nice earthy odor. 🙂
