How To Build A Straw Bale House

I saw this today, and though wow that is super cool. I don’t know about how sturdy the walls really are though. That is my only concern with this diy straw bale house.

Florian and his girlfriend built this house in rural Netherlands and they actually had to purchase the straw bales. If you can get them for free, that would save you a lot of money on this project.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • gravel
  • misprinted polypropylene bags
  • straw bales
  • re-purposed wood
  • sheep wool
  • pond liner
  • clay or mud plaster
  • windows
  • door
  • shovel
  • toolbox
  • wood pallets

As with any structure the foundation is very important. They had to did down about a foot or so to get to below the topsoil which is not very sturdy. The trench was then filled with gravel to strengthen it even more.

The roof is constructed from the re-purposed wood, the sheep wool and the pond liner. The floor is made from the wood pallets and the exterior walls are protected by clay or mud plaster. Altogether, this project took them about 9 months to complete.
