How To Bake In A Dutch Oven

I think when one thinks of a homestead kitchen, there is always one thing that features in it which is at least one dutch oven. The funny thing is although we have been living out here for a couple of years now, I have actually never used a dutch oven for baking, until this afternoon.

We got a couple of dutch ovens from my mother in law a while back, and up until now they have just been sitting in our kitchen. I ran into some dutch oven recipes the other day and decided that it was time to give it a try, starting with baking something very simple.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • dutch oven
  • firewood
  • recipe
  • charcoal bricks (optional)

It does not matter what you are trying to bake, the preparation is always pretty much the same. I also chose to use firewood which is free and build a large fire, than buying charcoal bricks. While waiting for the fire to heat up, you can then start mixing your ingredients.

Pour your dough or mixture into the dutch oven, before replacing the lid and placing some red hot coals on the top of it. Sit the dutch oven on top of some red hot coals, most of the coals should be placed on the top. I made some bread, but there are a lot of other recipes you can make.
