Homemade Yeast Recipe

One of the most annoying things that can happen in the kitchen, is when you decide to bake some homemade bread and you check the cupboard only to realize that you are fresh out of yeast. It happened to me the other day, which is when I discovered this homemade yeast recipe.

For such an essential ingredient, you would think that it is complicated or near impossible to make at home. Imagine to my surprise when I realised it is so simple to make, a first grader could do this. All the ingredients you need are right there in your kitchen and garden.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • apples or grapes or herbs
  • mason jar with lid
  • water
  • sharp knife
  • cutting board

First I cleaned my jar, before adding my sliced apples between a quarter and half full of the jar. Instead of using apples, you can also use grapes or vegetables or herbs. Just make sure whatever you use has its outside skin still on it. Water goes in last to about 3/4 of the jar, before you have to screw on the lid.

You will need about 3 days for your yeast to collect, so find a nice warm area to place your jar. I just placed mine on the kitchen sill that gets a lot of daily sunlight, but apparently just place it next to your stove. When you start to see a lot of bubbles forming in the jar, your yeast is ready and you can use this water for baking your bread instead.
