Homemade Flour Tortillas Recipe

I decided to try something new for dinner for this evening. I had seen this recipe for homemade tortillas from Jenny Jones, and have been wanting to try it for a while. Something simple, something easy and delicious.

Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 1 3/4 cups all purpose floor
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 3 tbsp oil (any oil should do)knife or cutter
  • cast iron pan
  • rolling pin
  • kitchen towel
  • tongs or spatula
  • mixing bowl

Instructions

1. Mix all the dry ingredients in the mixing bowl.

2. Add the oil and stir it into the mixture well.

3. Add the hot water and stir it in one or two times until everything starts to come together.

4. Place the ‘dough’ on a dry surface or cutting board and start kneading, squeezing and turning. (no need to floor the surface)

5. Preheat your pan to Medium/High.

6. Use a cutter to divide your ‘dough’ into eight equal portions.

7. Form each portion into a ball and flatten it out and then roll it out very thinly. You should be able to almost see through it.

8. Place your rolled out tortilla onto the pan, and fry on each side for between 1 to 2 minutes.

9. Use the tongs to remove the cooked tortilla from the pan and place them on your kitchen towel to cool down.

10. Repeat steps 7 to 10 for each of the portions.

This recipe makes 8 homemade tortillas, which are more than enough to feed an average family. If you need to make more, just scale up the ingredients accordingly. I kinda burnt a few of the first ones I tried, but the last few came out pretty good. They tasted great too with a little homemade salsa, some grilled chicken and lettuce leaves. 🙂
