If we were to compare how many treats my chickens get, versus the homestead dogs. The girls win by a long margin. I think in the past we have made these homemade dog biscuits as well as homemade dog food too. I thought I would try balance out the equation a little by making this homemade dog donuts recipe.
The main ingredient in this dog treat is the peanut butter, of course. It is a simple recipe that incorporates ingredients that are readily available in most kitchens. As far as time is concerned, expect to spend about 15 minutes on prep and then an additional 20 minutes baking in the oven.
Here’s What You’ll Need:
- skim milk
- peanut butter
- whole wheat flour
- baking powder
- carob powder
- baking sheet
- parchment paper
- cookie cutters
- small bowl
- medium bowl
- icing squeeze bottle
- rolling pin (optional)
Beat your egg well in the medium bowl, before adding the peanut butter as well as the milk. Continue beating until it is a smooth mixture. Slowly add the flour and the baking powder, using a fork to mix everything in makes it way easier. Flour your kitchen counter and knead your donut dough, until you are satisfied with the consistency.
I just pat down the dough until it is about half an inch think, however you can use a rolling pin too. Then grab your cookie cutter, and go wild on the dough marking out as many circles as possible. Use a smaller cutter to remove the center. Combine all the center scraps and roll the out to cut more donuts. Bake in your preheated oven at 375 degrees F for up to 20 minutes.
All that is left is the icing, that you can whip up in a small bowl by mixing carob powder and boiling water. You want a smooth paste, which you can soften by adding more water. Squeeze the icing onto your donuts, once they have cooled down. Voila, your dog treats are ready! 🙂
