Our homestead first aid kit is made up mostly of homemade potions and lotions. Things like homemade pain relief cream and the homemade antiseptic ointment, are usually easier and cheaper to make at home. Are you ready to kiss hives and chicken pox goodbye? My latest addition to the kit is this homemade calamine lotion recipe, I found online.
The recipe itself is super easy, the hard part maybe getting your hands on some of the ingredients. I love that she was actually able to suggest somealternative ingredients which are readily available in most homes.The lotion itself is also just as effective as the store bought version and has two slightly different recipes you can choose from.

Here’s What You’ll Need:
- zinc oxide
- iron oxide or homemade crayons
- bentonite clay
- baking soda or calcium hydroxide
- water
- small bowl
- whisk
- refillable plastic bottle or container with lid
- bottle or jar (optional)
- glycerin (optional)
- lavender essential oil or other antibacterial essential oil (optional)
Once you have acquired all the required ingredients, just lay them out on your kitchen table or counter. Measure out and add the suggested amounts into a small bowl. Then grab your whisk and gently mix all the ingredients together to make a smooth paste.
In case you want to store the lotion for longer periods of time, just mix only the dry ingredients and them store the mixture in your bottle or jar. You would them just add a little water, glycerin and essential oils whenever you need a fresh batch. Otherwise, the lotion can be stored in your fridge for 7 to 14 days.
