Here’s What You’ll Need:

  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1 1/4 cups warm milk
  • 1/4 cup softened butter or margarine
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg york
  • 3 3/4 cups all-purpose floor
  • mixing bowl
  • large saucepan
  • water
  • slotted spoon
  • baking sheet or pan
  • wire rack

Step By Step Directions

Step 1:

Dissolve yeast in warm milk in a mixing bowl.

Step 2:

Add the butter, sugar, salt and the egg york. Mix well.

Step 3:

Stir in enough flour forming a soft dough and the turn it onto a floured surface.

Step 4:

Knead the dough until smooth and elastic for about 6 to 8 minutes

Step 5:

Grease a bowl and place the dough in there. Turn it over once so that you can grease the top. Cover the bowl and allow the dough to rise to double its size for about an hour.

Step 6:

Punch the dough down using your fist and shape it into 12 equal balls. Then push your thumb through the center of each one creating a hole 1″ in diameter.

Step 7:

Place them on a floured surface and cover for 10 minutes, before flattening the balls.

Step 8:

Bring water to boil in the large saucepan before dropping the bagels into the boiling water one at a time. Allow the bagels to float to the surface before removing them using a slotted spoon.

Step 9:

Place on greased baking sheets and bake at 400 degrees F for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 10:

Remove the bagels from the baking sheets and place onto the wire racks to allow them to cool.

These bagels are a family favorite, each batch is gone while they are still fresh. However, if you have a few left over you can always freeze them in a ziploc bag or just store them in a cool dry place. Enjoy! 🙂
